No, not in any way that matters in a real room. And the study everyone cites for the opposite claim does not say what it is usually reported to say.
That is worth knowing before you buy plants for your air rather than for yourself, because there are good reasons to own a ZZ plant and this is not one of them.
Where the Air-Purifying Claim Came From
Almost every article on this subject traces back to one 1989 NASA study. Researchers sealed potted plants in small airtight chambers, introduced volatile organic compounds, and measured how the concentration fell. It did fall. The plants removed VOCs.
The catch is the chamber. It was a sealed box roughly the size of a large appliance, with no ventilation at all. Your home is not a sealed box. It exchanges air with outside continuously through vents, gaps, doors and windows, and that exchange is the dominant force acting on indoor air.
What Happened When Researchers Checked the Numbers
In 2019, Bryan Cummings and Michael Waring at Drexel University reviewed a dozen studies going back thirty years and converted every result into a common measure: clean air delivery rate, the standard used to rate actual air purifiers. Their paper was published in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology.
The finding was blunt. Once you account for normal ventilation, the rate at which potted plants remove VOCs is orders of magnitude too slow to matter. Ordinary air exchange in a house dilutes those compounds far faster than any realistic number of plants can absorb them.
To get the air-cleaning effect the sealed-chamber studies implied, you would need somewhere between 10 and 1,000 plants per square meter of floor space. In an average room that is a wall-to-wall jungle several plants deep, and even the low end of that range is not a room anyone lives in. The American Lung Association reached the same conclusion.
None of this means the plants do nothing. It means the effect is real in a sealed box, and irrelevant at the scale of a room with a door.
So What Is a ZZ Plant Actually Good For?
The honest answer is that its real strengths have nothing to do with air, and they are considerable.
It tolerates genuinely low light. Not “low light” in the marketing sense, but a north-facing room or an office cubicle several meters from a window. Very few plants stay presentable in those conditions and this one does.

It survives neglect. The thick underground rhizomes store water, so a ZZ plant handles being forgotten for a month better than almost anything else sold as a houseplant. If you travel, or you have killed things by inattention before, that is the feature that matters.

The wellbeing evidence is better than the air evidence. Research on indoor plants and mood, attention and perceived comfort is more consistent than the air-quality work ever was. Liking the room you are in is a real benefit. It is just a different one from filtration.

If You Actually Want Cleaner Indoor Air
Three things work, in order of effect:
- Ventilate. Opening a window for a few minutes does more for indoor VOC levels than any number of plants. This is the mechanism that makes plants irrelevant, so use it deliberately.
- Remove the source. New furniture, paint, air fresheners, scented candles and cleaning products are usually where indoor VOCs come from. Removing a source beats trying to filter it.
- Use a real filter. A HEPA unit rated for your room size handles particulates, and activated carbon handles some gases. Both are rated in the same clean air delivery rate units the Drexel researchers used, which is exactly why the comparison was so unflattering to plants.
One Thing Worth Knowing About ZZ Plants and Health
ZZ plants contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals throughout the plant. Chewing any part causes burning and irritation of the mouth for people and pets, which matters far more day to day than anything about air quality.
It is not usually dangerous, and it is not absorbed into the body, but it is genuinely painful. Keep it away from animals inclined to chew, and wash your hands after taking cuttings.

Does a ZZ plant remove any toxins at all?
In a sealed laboratory chamber, measurably yes. In a ventilated room, the effect is too small to detect against normal air exchange. Both statements are true and only the second one describes your home.
